To become a regular reader of the Bible we need to make
a deliberate and realistic plan.
Time
When will I read the Bible? For how long?
Decide: How much time I am going to set aside for my Bible reading and when in the day that time will be. Be specific about both: e.g. 10 minutes first thing in the morning / at night before bed / on the train going to work.
Tip: If you live with family tell them what you plan and ask them to help by not disturbing you during that time. Encourage your children to respect the time you spend with God.
Place
Where will I read the Bible?
Decide: Where I will do my Bible reading? Think of somewhere where you won’t be interrupted and can concentrate without distractions.
Tip: Make it enticing – Make a cuppa and sit on a comfy lounge / Listen to an audio Bible while going for a walk / Buy a new journal and nice pen to take notes.
Be prepared
What will I read?
Decide your Bible reading plan in advance (click here for some suggestions). Having a plan provides consistency and motivation and helps you spend your time reading the Bible not planning to read it.
Tip: Have everything you need for your reading ready and on hand – Bible / notebook / pens / highlighters – so you don’t waste time looking for things.
Set a goal
How do I measure my progress?
Make it manageable and achievable. Regularly reading the Bible for ten minutes 2-3 times a week is better than aiming for 1 hour every day and never getting around it.
Tip: Find someone to encourage you and hold you accountable – family / Christian friends / Growth Group.
Don’t give up
How will I keep going?
Reading the Bible is about growing our relationship with God. It’s not about doing the “right” or “Christian” thing.
